Learn which products to use to restore a sun-damaged door

Dear Glenn: My front door has a southern exposure, and over the years the sunlight has caused a deterioration of the stain/varnish we have on the door, even though the clear coating we used on it was supposed to be sun-resistant. We have a storm door and this deterioration is only on the part of the door in front of the storm door window. The rest of the door not exposed to sunlight is as good as new. What kind of UV ray or other ray blocking film can I use on the storm door window to reduce the deterioration on the front door coating and where can we get it? What is the best kind of stain and coating to use in this situation and where can we get it? The door is dark brown, and we'd like to stick with that color.

Dear Robert: As far as the UV film goes, call Michigan Glass Coatings, (800) 999-8468, www.michiganglasscoatings.com. They can install the right product for you. For the door that is affected by the sun, go to Shelby Paint and Decorating, (313) 881-0344, www.shelbypaint.com, for an education on what products to use, and how to restore your door.
