Fogging a crawl space can eliminate mold and musty odors

Dear Glenn: I was wondering if you could help us with a chronic problem of a very musty smelling crawl space that can be detected even inside our house. We have one layer of 6 mil plastic down over wet sand that never dried from a floor two years ago. It is a very deep, six-block crawl space with a sump pump. The side blocks are not covered with plastic. Should we put another layer of 6 mil plastic down on top of the one there, and put 6 mil plastic along the cement block of the wall of the crawl space? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. We also heard about some type of anti-mold, anti-bacterial agent that can be put in the crawl space to help it smell better and prevent mustiness. Supposedly, it is nontoxic. If you know of any such substance, we would be grateful if you'd pass the information along to us. Thanks much.

Dear Susan: I would get in touch with Foundation Systems of Michigan, (877) 379-6424, They specialize in crawl space encapsulation. Their procedure is called the Vaporloc Elite Advantage.

While getting rid of the musty odor, the process also dries the crawl space and eliminates mold. The non-toxic product is called Concrobium, (866) 811-4148, You rent a fogger and fog the entire crawl space.
