Thermal imaging camera can determine source of water leaks

Dear Glenn: My son has a small, waterfront 1940s-type cottage on a concrete slab. He has discovered water leaking under the carpet, wood platform and ceramic tiles that compose his present flooring over this concrete slab. We have determined three possibilities for the water leak and damage. Perhaps rain water and melting snow at perimeter of foundation and slab. Second, a hidden roof leak on the exterior of the cottage. Third, ground water entering somewhere along the perimeter of the foundation. Our understanding from friends is that there is a company or service that has infrared or other diagnostic tools that can trace water leaks in all hidden areas of a dwelling and determine the actual source of any water leak to the property. Do you know of someone in this neck of the woods that does offers this service?

Dear Bob: Tell your son to get in contact with Bob Carey of Infrared Services of Michigan, (810) 329-9033, www.ismichigan.com. He will be able to shoot the area with a thermal imaging camera to determine where the water entry points are.
