This brick company can refer you to someone who can solve your moisture problem

Dear Glenn: We have developed a big brick problem on our house. The bricks are powdering and disintegrating on our chimney at ground level and several other places. Brick repair people cannot advise what has caused this or if it will continue to spread to our other brick areas. They refer to it as a moisture issue. Friends have urged us to contact a few professional brick masons to evaluate and correct our problem. In reviewing Yellow Pages and local contractor catalogs, we find many companies that are brick workers but not real masons. We've searched the Internet to identify masons but have not been successful. Any advice in how we can locate a real mason would be appreciated.

Ken, Detroit

Dear Ken: Call Theut Products, (586) 949-1300, www.theutproductsinc.com.

They have been selling bricks for over 70 years and they can provide a referral to you. The white powder is soluble salts caused from moisture being present, then drying out and leaving the powder (salt).
